Remembering the Holocaust

The Jews, Israeli and Friends Club gathered in the Main Quad for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) as a way to honor the victims of the atrocity.

The event on April 20 was a way for the club to remember the Holocaust by discussing it with students while at the same time paying respects to the victims. Club members gathered wearing white shirts with "Remember the 6 million" written on the front with replicas of the yellow Star of David patch. Two tables were set up in front of the library to offer students information about the event.

One table by the Main Quad fountain had a timeline of the Holocaust along with a row of candles and photos including survivors after the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp by the United States Third Army. Also on the table were cards that told the life story of victims.

The second table near the steps of the library offered publications from the Anti-Defamation League and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum that focused on the history of anti-Semitism, all victims of the atrocities and the problems with Holocaust deniers.

Club members gathered in a circle to pay respects to victims while sharing stories of their family and how they survived or escaped the Holocaust.

Monday's tabling was part of a series of similer events taking place in the Bay Area for Yom HaShoah including a community wide observance at the Congregation Beth David and a Holocaust Panel along with a candlelight vigil at San Jose State University.

Yom HaShoah is an official holiday in Israel to honor the 6 million victims of the Holocaust and those who resisted tyranny.
